Portraits That Feel Like Heirlooms the Moment They’re Hung
Some photographs stop you in your tracks. A brushed oil portrait stays with you.
There is a reason the most storied families have always commissioned portraits.
Not to document.
To declare.
What a Brushed Oil Portrait Is
The art form that photography made possible and craftsmanship makes lasting.
A brushed oil portrait begins as a photograph taken during your session with Zoe. From there, every pixel is refined by hand, brushstroke by brushstroke, by a dedicated portrait artist using a process that combines the accuracy of photography with the warmth, texture, and depth of fine art painting.
The result does not look like a photograph. It does not look like a painting. It looks like something altogether its own: a portrait that feels both timeless and unmistakably yours.
Each piece is printed on museum-quality Giclée canvas, finished with contour brush strokes and oil enhancements if you so choose, and framed to the exact specifications of the space it will live in. We personally install every portrait in our client's homes.
This is not a filter. It is not a software effect. Every stroke is applied by hand, which is why each portrait takes four to eight weeks and why no two are ever identical.
Why Families Choose Brushed Oil Portraits
It is the one piece in the room that makes people stop.
There is a difference between art that decorates a wall and art that defines a room. Families who commission brushed oil portraits are not looking for a nice photo to frame. They are looking for something that communicates, without a word, who this family is and what this family values.
These portraits are chosen to mark a season of life with intention. A twenty-fifth anniversary. A family gathered for the last time in a childhood home. Three generations in one room for one afternoon. The kind of moment that deserves more than a phone snapshot and a storage folder.
Your walls are already telling a story about your family. A brushed oil portrait ensures that story is told beautifully.
Our 25 Year Anniversary was on March 2, 2021. It was during a time when social distancing held many restrictions on getting together. Instead of celebrating with friends and family, we chose to have a private vow renewal with our three children instead.
It was a cherished moment to have our three children by our side to celebrate with us. To commemorate it, we have this gorgeously designed 30x40 brush portrait hanging in our home. When company comes, they are in awe.
What the Process Looks Like
The Craft Behind the Portrait
Why Giclée canvas and hand-painted brushstrokes matter.
Not all printed portraits are the same. Zoe Martin uses the Giclée fine art printing process, the same archival-quality method used by museums and galleries, which means the colors, depth, and detail in your portrait will remain true for generations without fading.
The brushstroke process goes beyond print. Each portrait is worked by hand after printing, with individual strokes applied to the skin, hair, clothing, and background to give the piece a presence and texture that a photograph simply cannot carry. The result rivals traditional oil paintings because in every meaningful way, it is one.
This level of craft takes time. Most portraits are delivered within four to six weeks. Larger family sessions may take up to eight weeks. Rush processing is available upon request.

Weather permitting, we also photograph outdoors, however, we have found that most families prefer to be photographed inside where the temperature is controlled. We can discuss outdoor options with you during your consultation.
-
During your consultation, Zoe will visit your home and help you choose what to wear for your session. For families coming from different locations across Dallas-Fort Worth, we discuss options during the consultation call. The goal is that you feel confident, comfortable, and exactly like yourself.
-
Two reasons. First, certain patterns and fabrics create visual interference when photographed, which affects how the brushstroke work translates. Second, and more importantly, seeing the wall where the portrait will live before the session allows us to make decisions about color, tone, and styling that ensure the finished piece is designed for that specific space, not just for a generic wall.
-
Zoe and her team handle every installation personally. When we determine the location during the in-home consultation, we plan every detail, the hardware, the height, the relationship to other pieces in the room. You will not be handed a box and left to figure it out.
