If you enjoyed connecting dots on your family tree to make discoveries, you're going to like this post.
Genealogy is something I began studying when my children were very young. I used an online resource to build my tree and connect with people who could have been family. The discoveries would keep me awake for hours late into the night.
Leaves would pop up on trees when I would input information, which was like a reward for knowing something about my family. Names, dates, and sometimes photos were able to be shared through those early online researches. It's been over 20 years since I started building those trees. These days, you can do much more with family member's information.
One popular option is to write details about your family. On some sites, you can invite other family members to record something about the memory, which I encourage. Even better than written notes is a favorite option of mine, audio recordings. A voice is instantly recognizable. It becomes a gift after someone is gone. I know.
Before my sister, Kristina, took her last breath, I recorded her final thoughts to her daughter, Kaitlyn. Their family dog, Tiki, had been beside Kristina through thick and thin of her breast cancer treatments. Even in hospice, Kristina invited Tiki onto her lap while she lay in bed.
After Kristina's Celebration of Life, I took the videos to Kaitlyn who was lying on her bed with Tiki. I clicked play. As soon as Tiki heard Kristina's voice, she spun her head around to find her. We broke down crying.
There was no mistaking that voice.
This family history month, think about the people whose voices you want to capture forever. Then, contact me to find out how we can help you do that. It would be my honor. Generations from now, your family will get to hear that person's voice and hear their smile. Now is the perfect time to record your family's story.
